Sprint Nextel and NetLogic Microsystems say they have joined non-profit organization Road to 100G Alliance.

Founded in 2007 by Bay Microsystems, Lattice Semiconductor, Enigma Semiconductor, IDTTM and IP Infusion, the 100G Alliance is working to develop a set of interoperability standards for high-capacity data networks.

Road to 100G Alliance Chairman and President Bill Weisinger said “we welcome Sprint as our first major wireless service provider representative. Sprint's perspective will help guide the Alliance in terms of new services and applications for advanced network and telecom equipment, and will certainly bring to light many important issues.”

He added “we are also excited to have NetLogic Microsystems join our Alliance as they will bring their broad perspective as well, and especially their expertise on high-speed integrated circuits.”

According to its statement, the alliance differentiates itself from other standards bodies, in that it’s “focused solely on identifying and addressing the complex implementation and integration issues which might compromise the adoption and proliferation of next generation telecommunications and network solutions.”

While Sprint has been struggling over the past two years in trying to retain wireless customers, the carrier has been pushing ahead with its 4G WiMAX effort, Xohm.

Rather than pushing a particular standard, the Alliance hopes to ensure interoperability between varying technologies, and encourage service providers to deploy higher capacity networks.
