A group of Xerox scientists think the camera phone could be the next portable
document scanner device and have developed image capture technology to make it happen.
At a European research center, Xerox scientists designed the software to enhance
image capture, but say the camera phone has the potential to enable users to
acquire, store, read, print and share documents as needed.
The software was actually developed some time ago, but senior scientist Christopher Dance says Xerox had to wait for mobile phone technology to catch up before the company could market the software.
With the introduction of the mega-pixel wireless camera phone, Dance says the technology has caught up.
The technology, which is designed to capture the image, correct blurring, eliminate shadows and reflections and compress the image to make it easier to print, could enable remote employees to capture notes, documents, screens and whiteboards and then transmit them.
Xerox is currently offering the patented technology through its licensing agent IPValue Management.
Dance believes Xerox will move further into the mobile environment in the future, offering other Xerox document technologies, such as indexing, retrieval or summarization.
