Today, Samsung announces that it has developed a single-chip RFID reader for cellular phones for use in the
business segment.
Overall, the global demand for mobile RFID is expected to grow almost 200 percent over the next three years,
according to market research firm RoA Group.
Samsung says RFID readers will enable mobile phone users to find out information about products with embedded
tags such as movie posters, various food products, clothing, museums or tourist exhibits.
Dr. Chilhee Chung, senior v.p. of Samsung Electronics' System LSI division said "we are enabling anytime,
anywhere mobile access to information. RFID chip reader systems allow consumers to pull context-specific
information into their mobile devices while on the go."
Chung added "our mobile RFID single-chip technology is an important step in the evolution of ubiquitous
computing environments."
While it can be embedded into mobile devices such as handsets and handheld readers used in retail stores,
initially Samsung expects the major application for its new RFID reader chip to be in card-type readers that
plug into mobile handsets.
