All across the U.S., Motorola is launching a "widget building contest" through its MOTODEV program.
What Motorola calls "widgets" are miniature mobile applications that run on a homescreen instead of opening
a new screen or window.
The concept became popular on Apple Macintosh personal computers a few years ago.
"Widgets" then quickly found their in way into wireless phones. At the same time, mobile developer contests
are getting more and more frequent in the wireless phone business as a method of encouraging third-party
support for new mobile handsets and programming technologies.
Motorola’s new VE-66 mobile device now includes a widgets development framework, company officials said.
Motorola will accept entries until Feb. 27, 2009 for Best Widget in a Category, Best Local Content and Best
Use of APIs (application programming interfaces).
Winners will be announced in the spring. Prizes include cash, mobile phone hardware and marketing support.
