Alltel Wireless says its customers can now use their mobile phone’s idle time to automatically download
some new content.
Alltel is making its new Mobile Posse’s content service available as a free download to all its network
users, even those without specific data plans.
However, customers need to be warned that they will still be charged for the airtime used.
Alltel says content will download when a handset is not being used and will include news and even discount
offers.
Mobile Posse vice president Anurag Mehta said that currently, the service bases the information on a customer’s
home location, but eventually it will use more precise geo-location technology to be more useful when a customer
is away from home.
Mehta said his company is also working with unspecified other major wireless carriers. He declined to comment
on the prospects of working with Verizon Wireless specifically, since that carrier didn't yet complete its
acquisition of Alltel.
Overall, content is also based on the customer’s age, gender, time and day, as provided by Alltel.
The menu options will disappear when customers press any other phone button if they choose to do so.
