Gartner says that, overall, business people and consumers alike bought over 309.2 million mobile phones
globally in the third quarter of this year.
These numbers are up from 305 million in the second quarter of 2007, and this even despite the current
financial crisis.
That’s a 6 percent increase, but less than half of 2007’s growth rate of 16 percent, Gartner said.
Nokia sold about 118 million phones in the quarter, followed by Samsung with nearly 53 million phones.
For their part, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG all contended for third place by selling about 24.8 million
units, 24.6 million and 24 million cell phones, respectively.
Apple finished in 7th position with 2 million units sold of its iPhone, just behind BlackBerry maker Research
In Motion.
About 117 million mobile phones were sold in the Asia-Pacific market, nearly 58 million in Eastern Europe,
the Middle East and Africa, 47 million in North America and 43.5 million cell phones in Western Europe.
Gartner didn't announce sales for the Latin American market as of yet. Those are scheduled some time
next week.
