Broadcom says it has developed a new single-chip HSPA processor that integrates key 3G cellular and mobile
technologies for mobile handsets.
Overall, Broadcom says its new 3G Phone on a Chip solution will enable manufacturers to build next-generation
3-G HSUPA phones with advanced features, sleek form factors and long battery life, for much less than other
chipset solutions.
Broadcom also said that customers using devices made from the new chips will enjoy the fastest download and
upload speeds available.
Broadcom said "never before has anyone integrated as many radio devices on a single chip."
The microprocessor combines an HSUPA 3G baseband, a multiband radio frequency (RF) transceiver, Bluetooth
2.1, an FM radio receiver and an FM radio transmitter.
Broadcom's new solution also supports advanced multimedia processing, up to 5-megapixel camera support, and 30
frame per second video with TV Out".
Broadcom also said it fully supports the HSUPA, HSDPA, WCDMA and EDGE cellular protocols.
The chips are now available to "early access customers," a Broadcom sales representative said.
Shares in the company rose $1.11, or 2.8 percent in pre-market trading on news of the chip solution.
