Current conditions in the wireless market call for flat rate pricing in mobile broadband services.

This is fairly easy for consumers to understand and should encourage broader usage.

But according to Randy Fuller, Camiant’s v.p. of business development, wireless operators are now concerned that the applications will harm their networks by driving up overall operating costs and reduce signal quality.

According to Fuller, it's conceivable that mobile users will use so much bandwidth that it will drive up all of the other associated costs such as radio resources and backhaul.

Additionally, some so-called "bandwidth hogs" can negatively affect the overall quality of network performance and overall speed for all users.

Fuller says that's why many wireless operators are increasingly turning to policy controls to contain costs and better maintain network quality.

Camiant’s PCSS (Policy Control Server System) allows operators to dynamically allocate specific network resources to maximize throughput and speed within the limits of their existing networks.

“Camiant provides operators with vital real-time intelligence and management of their network resources, helping create an infrastructure designed to capitalize on new revenue opportunities,” Fuller said.

Camiant has been actively working with U.S. wireless carriers, but recently also signed on a new European GSM operator as a customer of its policy control platform.

However, Camiant declined to reveal the operator or the value of the contract.
