Verizon Wireless is saying that, contrary to some reports published last week, it has not decided to
increase text-messaging fees for content aggregators from 1 cent per message to 3 cents.
Verizon is in fact denying all allegations that it increased any of its prices for text messaging.
The possibility of a potential price increase is just one proposal in its plans, and Verizon could not act
unilaterally to implement it, a company spokesman explained late yesterday.
On Oct. 10, initial reports cited a letter from Verizon to content aggregators in which the wireless
operator said the increase is effective November 1st.
That was a misstatement, Verizon said. The company would be the largest wireless carrier if its proposed
$5.9 billion acquisition of Alltel is approved by the U.S. government.
Verizon declined to say if other proposals are being considered, if there’s a timeframe for reaching a
decision about any change, or how the miscommunication happened in the first place.
Concerns throughout the industry is that if text messaging fees are increased, then many small companies
would be adversely affected and that charges could be passed on to mobile users.
