T-Mobile USA says it has launched its 3G network in Sacramento and that it will also open it in Memphis and
Tampa this week.
Customers in the Washington, D.C. area will get service in late November.
Network coverage in the U.S. will then exceed 120 large cities, company officials said, in following up on a
rollout plan announced in September.
In that original plan, T-Mobile said it also plans to connect Birmingham, Denver, Detroit and Kansas City by
the end of this year.
T-Mobile uses a UMTS/HSDPA data network as first described two years ago.
Progress on its 3G data network is good news for T-Mobile, as on Oct. 9, the company experienced a setback in
its fight against the FCC’s planned AWS-3 spectrum auction. T-Mobile
and other opponents say proposed AWS-3 systems will cause harmful interference on their networks.
T-Mobile officials also repeated that the G1 phone, which is the first U.S. smartphone using
Google’s Android operating system, will be in some retail stores and online portals tomorrow.
