Late this afternoon, IDT Spectrum said it is accepting offers for its portfolio of 38 GHz and 28 to 31 GHz
spectrum licenses, which the company says are ideal for backhaul and last-mile solutions.
IDT's portfolio includes 931 licenses at 38 GHz (sometimes referred to as 39 GHz) and 16 licenses at 28-31 GHz
LMDS (local multipoint distribution service), with an average of 1,000 MHz of spectrum in the top 25 U.S. markets.
The deadline for offers to be submitted is Nov. 12.
In the New York City market, the portfolio includes an aggregate of 1,650 MHz of spectrum, the company says.
Nationwide, the IDT Spectrum portfolio can support 4G, LTE and other bandwidth-intensive technologies.
IDT Spectrum is a subsidiary of IDT Corp., which holds and leases fixed wireless spectrum.
An IDT spokesperson says the spectrum could be a key component in a cost-effective backhaul solution for
wireless operators to expand their bandwidth to ease congestion.
IDT acquired the spectrum licenses in connection with Winstar Communications’ bankruptcy more than eight years
ago, and the company has received “significant interest” lately in its spectrum holdings as network operators
plan to expand bandwidth, a company spokesperson said.
It will be interesting to see who acquires the spectrum and for exactly how much.
Some wireless industry observers estimate that there could more spectrum to be sold in similar frequencies in
the next few months.
We will keep you posted.
