An undisclosed software router glitch on AT&T’s network caused an Internet access outage for many Apple
iPhone customers in the northeastern U.S. yesterday, AT&T said.
AT&T says the problem has been repaired successfully as of 5.00 PM EST yesterday.
However, the wireless carrier's 3G network has had many similar problems in the past despite
some extensive planning and network maintenance.
To this date, there are still no valid answers about why so many users of the iPhone 3G are reportedly
experiencing such poor network reception. This is over and above yesterday's severe network outage.
Industry observers now say that such serious problems will have to be fully addressed and eliminated
before the iPhone can succeed as a mainstream business tool.
For its part, Apple did deliver a software patch for the iPhone in August, and additional patches are
widely expected in October or sooner.
Although initial sales of the iPhone were furious and rapid-paced when it became available to the
public in July, Apple's new 3G handset has been off to a rocky start nevertheless.
There are still many problems that need to be addressed, both on Apple's side as well as AT&T.
