According to Nielsen Mobile, post-paid wireless users in the U.S. are now sending more text messages than they make voice calls.

Nielsen's survey was done between mid-June and July 31st, and overall, 50,184 respondents participated in the survey.

The actual trend began in the fourth quarter of last year, when the average number of monthly texts reached 218 compared to 213 average monthly (voice) calls.

But Nielsen waited until the second quarter of 2008 to announce its results, simply because the initial numbers could have been a statistical anomaly and this year's first quarter figures could’ve been a coincidence, officials explained.

As of the second quarter of 2008, average texts reached 357, compared to only 204 phone calls.

Nielsen's survey included customers across all the major wireless carriers in the U.S.
