Early this morning, Sprint said that it plans to offer its wireless users more device options by launching
mobile devices running on Qualcomm's Brew Mobile Platform (MP).
The Brew Mobile Platform can support both feature phones and smartphones as well.
A press release announcing the move didn't specify when the smartphones using Brew MP will be on the market,
and a Sprint spokesperson was not immediately available for comment. The voice mail we left wasn't returned either.
In April, Qualcomm canceled its annual Brew conference, citing the global economic downturn. Since then, it
also has acquired Cox Communications as a Brew customer.
Overall, by supporting both high-performance mobile Java and native applications on Brew MP, Sprint says it
can offer more advanced devices to a broader set of wireless customers than before.
Two months ago, Verizon Wireless renewed its support for Brew, announcing an agreement with Qualcomm to better
promote growth on the platform, including a focus on improving the appllication discovery process for its
wireless subscribers.
It will be interesting to see over the next few months if other wireless operators will follow
in Sprint's footsteps and offer the Brew MP platform to its users.
