Qwest Communications has launched a new backhaul solution for wireless service providers the company announced
late yesterday.
Qwest's new Mobile Ethernet Backhaul feature can be tailored to a wireless service provider's requirements.
Additionally, it can be geared to meet wireless operators' various needs for current 3G technology as well as
their needs for LTE service and Wi-MAX requirements.
Qwest has already started developing its new service with Tier 1 operators in mind, but it quickly realized
it can be scaled for Tier 2s and Tier 3s as well, according to Ted Wietecha, corporate communications manager at
Qwest.
Qwest's new solution fully enables ongoing fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) deployment and provides a migration path
from traditional SONET services to Ethernet.
Qwest says wireless customers can be assured they only pay for the bandwidth they actually use and nothing more.
The new backhaul solution is available in Qwest's 14-state local service territory and reaches most major
metropolitan areas in Qwest's territory.
Qwest already has signed various deals in place and continues to talk with large and small wireless service
providers alike, although the company declined to reveal any specific names.
Qwest has announced its new backhaul service at 4G World in Chicago yesterday.
There are now some wireless industry observers that think other mobile service providers could offer a similar
solution in the near future.
Without going into any details, last July, one industry insider has been told that Verizon Wireless could be
considering a similar backhaul solution for other mobile service operators.
As always, we will keep you posted.
