LG Electronics says that its new LG-GW620 handset will run on Android and will be available in Europe in the
fourth quarter.
According to LG's press release, the new GW-620 handset will feature a three-inch touchscreen and slide-out
Qwerty keyboard.
Early photos of the mobile device appear to show a 3.5 mm standard headphone jack. Otherwise, specs for the
smartphone were limited.
Europeans will get the Android-based Motorola Dext, launching in the near future with Orange in the United
Kingdom and France, Telefonica in Spain and America Movil in Latin America.
As the latest arrival to the Android space, LG faces some very stiff competition. Last week, Motorola unveiled
the Motorola Cliq, an Android-based smartphone for T-Mobile USA in the United States.
Just yesterday, Google said that it has released its newest version of its
Android OS, dubbed Donut, the new v1.6 Software Developer Kit (SDK).
Donut is an upgrade from its previous Cupcake version, the previous v1.5 SDK.
Android's new Donut SDK offers mobile application developers access to a whole new range of new APIs.
The SDK features support for additional screen resolutions, including QVGA and WVGA, as well as gesture APIs
and a text-to-speech function.
On Sep. 9, Sprint announced that it will begin offering the Android-based HTC Hero handset on Oct. 11. Not
surprisingly, developers can now expect to see devices running the Donut as early as next month.
As one analyst was recently quoted to say "Android is now everywhere."
