Mobile apps developer Kineto Wireless says it has created a new wireless VoIP application specifically
designed to be resold through a mobile operators' app store.
Kineto's new app runs on an operators' existing voice network infrastructure and is fully compatible with
several mobile operating systems, including iPhone, Android, Symbian and even Windows Mobile.
For now, Kineto is offering a limited number of mobile VoIP subscription trials to qualified mobile operators,
and the company says it will concentrate even more on the VoIP apps segment going forward.
A recent report from In-Stat revealed that mobile VoIP apps are being increasingly adopted by wireless
subscribers for both domestic and international calls.
The research firm even predicts calls placed over a Wi-Fi connection will generate global sales of over $32
billion in less than five years from now with over 278 million registered users.
Kineto's mobile VoIP application can be rebranded and positioned as an alternative to third-party mobile
VoIP applications.
Mobile service operators have been reluctant to allow applications like Skype, Google Voice and Truphone
to run on their networks because they offer competitively priced calls, especially for international service.
In-Stat analyst Frank Dickson says "companies such as Skype and Vonage have influenced mobile users to think of
voice as a data application. The increasing penetration of Wi-Fi in mobile devices was the beach head that mobile
VoIP applications needed."
It will be revealing to see if other similar mobile app developers follow in a similar path as Kineto in
the coming weeks.
